Secret cipher connections between East and West - The last use of the GDR T-310 cipher machines
In the few months between the peaceful revolution in the GDR and reunification, important but little-known events took place behind the scenes. This includes the use of the GDR T-310 cifel freezers in the two government bunkers in the Ahr valley and in Wandlitz-Prenden near Berlin. Secret telexes were exchanged between the interior ministries of the two German states via this connection.
The lecture uses contemporary records and reports from eyewitnesses to shed light on how the devices were transported from Berlin to Marienthal in strict secrecy, installed there and finally put into operation. The political context and the role of this particular communication link in the unification process will also be discussed.
What was the significance of this secret dedicated line? Why was it discontinued as early as August 1990, while a parallel shortwave radio link continued to exist beyond reunification until May 1991? Answers to these and other exciting questions await you in this presentation.
